{"id":351,"date":"2023-03-31T16:02:21","date_gmt":"2023-03-31T16:02:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stoneedge.com\/kb\/?post_type=ht_kb&#038;p=351"},"modified":"2024-07-29T17:29:45","modified_gmt":"2024-07-29T17:29:45","slug":"add-a-shipping-box-as-an-inventory-item","status":"publish","type":"ht_kb","link":"https:\/\/stoneedge.com\/kb\/articles\/add-a-shipping-box-as-an-inventory-item\/","title":{"rendered":"Add a Shipping Box as an Inventory Item"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Overview<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"BulletedList\">Boxes can be designated as &#8220;products&#8221; or &#8220;boxes&#8221; within\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: small;\">SEOM<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li class=\"BulletedList\">When defining inventory records for boxes, be sure to include accurate dimensions.<\/li>\n<li class=\"BulletedList\">The QOH of each &#8220;box&#8221; inventory record can be decremented each time an order containing an assigned product is shipped, depending on the state of the\u00a0<strong>IgnoreQOH\u00a0<\/strong>field on the inventory record of the box and system parameter\u00a0<strong>CheckInventory<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li class=\"BulletedList\">The Purchase Order system can be used to manage the purchase of boxes which are products and shipping containers.<\/li>\n<li class=\"BulletedList\">To keep shipping costs to a minimum when major shipping carriers UPS and FedEx\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/online-shipping-blog.endicia.com\/fedex-ups-usps-shipping-rates-dimensional-weight\/\">change their method of calculating shipping rates<\/a>\u00a0for ground shipments at the end of 2014, it is best to pack all items in the smallest, and fewest containers physically possible.<\/li>\n<li class=\"BulletedList\">Shipping boxes can be assigned to specific products by selecting one from\u00a0<strong>Default Box<\/strong>\u00a0on the\u00a0<i>Miscellaneous<\/i>\u00a0tab of the product\u00a0<i>Inventory<\/i>\u00a0record. If you use this setting be sure the box selection matches the minimum dimensions of the product to avoid an unnecessary increase in shipping costs. The\u00a0<strong>Default Box<\/strong>\u00a0setting takes precedence over the dimensions on the\u00a0<i>Miscellaneous<\/i> tab when there is only one item in an order. If more than one item is present, the program suggests a box that can hold the total capacity of both items.<\/li>\n<li class=\"BulletedList\">If a\u00a0<strong>Default Box<\/strong>\u00a0is\u00a0<i>not<\/i>\u00a0assigned to products, the program suggests which box to use if\u00a0<strong>Length<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Width<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Height\u00a0<\/strong>dimensions are provided on the\u00a0<i>Miscellaneous<\/i>\u00a0tab of the product\u00a0<i>Inventory<\/i>\u00a0record, assuming you have boxes with sufficient capacity defined as inventory items. This method is preferred over using the\u00a0<strong>Default Box<\/strong>\u00a0setting in order to avoid being charged for incorrect package measurements after the package is shipped if the Default Box setting is not accurate.<\/li>\n<li class=\"BulletedList\">For single item orders, the program uses the dimensions of the item\u2019s <strong>Default Box<\/strong>,\u00a0or the dimensions in the\u00a0<i>Miscellaneous\u00a0<\/i>tab of the\u00a0product record, when rate shopping or printing shipping labels.<\/li>\n<li class=\"BulletedList\">For multiple-item orders, the program looks for a box large enough to hold all the items in the order and displays that\u00a0<strong>Box\u00a0<\/strong>and its dimensions in the\u00a0<i>Pack &amp; Ship<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>QuickShip<\/i>\u00a0screens. If all items do not physically fit into the suggested box, manually override the selected\u00a0<strong>Box\u00a0<\/strong>via the user interface.<\/li>\n<li class=\"BulletedList\">You can manually override the box selection or dimensions when printing a shipping label, but you cannot override the dimensions when Rate Shopping.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Best Practices<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"BulletedList\">Due to impending changes in the method by which UPS and FedEx calculate shipping rates for ground shipments, it is\u00a0<i>imperative<\/i>\u00a0that inventory records contain accurate\u00a0<strong>Length<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Width<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Height\u00a0<\/strong>information, regardless of whether the item is a shipping container\u00a0<i>or<\/i>\u00a0a regular product.<\/li>\n<li class=\"BulletedList\">Having an assortment of box sizes that align with your products and most common order sizes is just as important in order to keep shipping costs down since size is now a factor as well as weight.<\/li>\n<li class=\"BulletedList\">Minimize the use of the\u00a0<strong>Pack Separately<\/strong>\u00a0field as it forces the order to be shipped in more than one container.<\/li>\n<li class=\"BulletedList\">If you don&#8217;t need to track the QOH of shipping boxes, select\u00a0<strong>IgnoreQOH\u00a0<\/strong>on the\u00a0<i>Items<\/i>\u00a0tab to avoid any negative impact on operations if your supply is exhausted.\u00a0If you do need to track the QOH of shipping containers,\u00a0be sure to set your reorder point high enough so you do not run out of stock.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How to Add a Box as an Inventory Item<\/h2>\n<p>The method to add a shipping box as an Inventory item is similar to adding a product.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"NumberedList\">Go to\u00a0<strong><i>Main Menu&gt;Manage My Inventory&gt;View &amp; Manage My Inventory<\/i><\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"NumberedList\">Select\u00a0<strong>Add\u00a0<\/strong>in the upper right-hand corner.<\/li>\n<li class=\"NumberedList\">Enter values in the\u00a0<strong>Local SKU<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Item Name<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong># On Hand<\/strong>\u00a0fields.<\/li>\n<li class=\"NumberedList\">Select\u00a0<strong>Add\u00a0Primary Supplier<\/strong>\u00a0to provide purchasing information about the box. \u00a0(<strong>Supplier<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Supplier&#8217;s SKU<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Unit Cost\u00a0<\/strong>fields are required)<\/li>\n<li class=\"NumberedList\">Select the\u00a0<i>Miscellaneous<\/i>\u00a0tab.<\/li>\n<li class=\"NumberedList\">Select \u00a0&#8220;<strong>This is a Box, not a product<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/li>\n<li class=\"NumberedList\">Enter the box&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Length<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Width<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Height<\/strong>\u00a0dimensions.<\/li>\n<li class=\"NumberedList\">Select\u00a0<strong>Save<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Overview Boxes can be designated as &#8220;products&#8221; or &#8220;boxes&#8221; within\u00a0SEOM.
